How (and why) Legolas got on the horse

There is hardly any other scene we have discussed more than the one in which Legolas swings himself so strangely up onto Gimli's horse. But this physically improbable pirouette was never planned that way. A broken rib prevented Orlando Bloom from pulling off the intended stunt, but the footage with him and the Rohirrim was already in the can. Weta Digital decided to use a digital double and had to make a transition from live-action Legolas to digital Legolas AND come up with a stunt. 35 options were created, one of which involves Legolas performing a (no less unrealistic) backflip! Matt Aitken on the final shot: "Any other point of view would be ridiculous because it defies the laws of physics. Legolas goes through the ground, the horse and even Gimli."
