What makes a genuine collectible?

Three features separate a genuine collectible from a mere souvenir: license, faithfulness to detail, and context. What does "limited" mean for collectibles?

That the edition is limited – sometimes numbered, sometimes documented with a certificate. Whether and how a piece is limited is on the respective product page. For collectors, what matters less is the number itself than the certainty: this piece won't be reproduced forever.

Why do collectors keep the original packaging?

Because it belongs with the piece: it protects during transport and moves, documents completeness, and with many editions is itself elaborately designed. A collectible without its packaging is like a book without its cover – it still works, but something's missing.

What's the right way to display collectibles?
