"All Birds in the Sky" by Charlie Jane Anders is many things: a magical science fiction novel, an unforgettable love story between a witch and a nerd, and a subtle inventory of modern life.
Patricia Delfine realizes early on that she is a witch. After all, she can talk to birds, or at least she used to be able to (on that warm summer day). Laurence Armstead is a nerd: As a high school student, he invents a time machine in his children's room that allows him to travel two seconds into the future. Although they couldn't be more different, they quickly become friends.
At the end of their school days, they lose sight of each other, only to meet again a few years later in San Francisco: But the timing is extremely inconvenient: The world is being hit by an ecological catastrophe: Entire regions are sinking into the sea, streams of refugees are crossing the world. Scientists and witches are looking for a way out, but they can't agree.
Laurence and Patricia find themselves on different sides of the dispute and have to ask themselves: Who can we trust when the world is out of kilter, the mind or the feeling?
"What a great book! A wonderful synthesis of magic and technology, joy and sorrow, romance and wisdom. An absolute must." Lev Grossman
