One Piece
"You want my treasure? You can have it! Why don't you look for it? Somewhere I've hidden the greatest treasure in the world!" And that's exactly what Monkey D. Ruffy and his straw-hat pirates have been chasing on the Grand Line since 1997.

One Piece and the Nine Circles of Hell
Dragon Ball is considered an important inspiration for Once Piece, but author Eiichir? Oda was also inspired by classical literature. Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, for example, was clearly the inspiration for the maximum-security prison Impel Down. In the original, Dante travels with the poet Virgil through the nine circles of hell, while Luffy descends the six (officially five) levels of the prison. Whether it's circles or levels, in either case, the severity of the crimes and the associated punishment always increases.
One Piece: one supreme superlative
A slender boy, endowed with abundant naivety and a cheerful attitude, seeks the greatest treasure in the world and wants to become king of the pirates. If this description immediately makes you think of Monkey Island, you should be aware of our appreciation. And you're not completely off the mark if it's the classic pirate films of the 30s and 40s that first come to mind. But what we mean here is neither of these; we are referring to by far the most successful manga series in the world: One Piece!
As with most success stories, the basic format sounds quite simple at first. The naturally cheerful Monkey D. Luffy is captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, has more confidence than sense and, like all pirates in the One Piece world, he wants to find the legendary treasure belonging to the notorious Gol D. Rogers, hidden somewhere on the Grand Line. The treasure that is, not the pirate. But what unfolds is an epic adventure of indescribable proportions, with countless cool locations, and characters that only gain additional depth and fascination as the episodes or manga accumulate. The result is an inimitable success that has lasted for more than 25 years.
Success all along the Grand Line
The One Piece manga by Eiichir? Oda has been running since 1997 and has been wiping the floor, or rather the deck, with the assembled manga competition ever since. There are all sorts of figures to back up this claim, but we've collected just a few. Over 100 volumes have now been published and, as of August 2022, more than 516 million copies have been sold. Japan alone has sold a whopping 410 million volumes! And that's just the tip of the iceberg ...
According to the Japanese company Oricon, in 2012 One Piece became the first manga to break the barrier of 100 million copies sold. Yes, okay, with the non-trivial caveat that this claim applies since the company has been collecting figures. Which ultimately means since 2008. But none of that should diminish its success, because One Piece was the best-selling manga series for eleven years in a row, from 2008 to 2018. The Japanese records for individual issues are also astonishing. In 2009, for example, the 56th issue racked up 2.85 million units, giving it the biggest first print run of any manga ever, and the follow-up issue was the first to reach a print run of 3 million. One Piece is also the only manga to have a first print run of over 3 million volumes for more than ten years. And in September 2021, it was announced that every single one of the 100 issues published so far had sold more than one million copies.
This success is not limited to the manga. The associated anime has been broadcast since 1999 and now has over 1,000 episodes, a total of 15 films and 13 TV specials. Along the way, more than 50 video games (if you count mobile games), various books, music albums, plays, restaurants and even its own theme park have been created. Netflix also has a live-action series in the works, with writer Eiichir? Oda on board as executive producer. Given the scale of this content and associated media, it is only logical that One Piece is one of the most successful pop culture brands of all time.
